Tips for Elongating Your Silhouette

If you are under 5’4″, it sometimes can be hard to find clothing that fits just right. You know all too well that cropped pants are usually just pants, and midi skirts are typically maxi skirts. While a good tailor is a number you should have on speed dial, there are ways you can elongate your silhouette.

Shop the Petite Section

Gone are the days of being frustrated that you have material just hanging off of you: The petite section is tailored for your body type. The downfall is that not all stores have petite sections. But you can always search online for extended size options.

Opt for V-Necks

V-necks allow a little more skin to show and don’t cut you off as high as other necklines. As a result, V-necks create a long line that makes you appear taller.

Think About Textiles

If you’re trying to appear taller, steer clear of heavy, bulky textiles like corduroy or thick wool, and opt for lighter fabrics such as cotton or linen.

Go Monochrome

Creating an uninterrupted line (such as one that is all one color) elongates your entire body. Monochromatic is also trending right now, making these pieces readily available in any color you want.

Show Off Your Legs!

If you’re of shorter stature and feel comfortable doing so, show off your legs by wearing shorter skirts and opting for shorts when you can. As we approach cooler months, consider wearing tights with your shorter pieces; this is also a great way to add texture and interest to your outfit.

Go Ahead With Your High Heels

Of course, high heels are going to make you appear taller. Now, high heels do not have to mean uncomfortable stilettos. Instead, try some clogs with added height or comfy block heels. We’re all for that trendy/comfy combination.

High-Waisted Bottoms Are Your Best Friend

Snagging a pair of high-waisted trousers will make you look like you have legs for days. You can achieve this look with linen pants or jeans; simply pair with a top, and you’ve got an effortlessly chic elongated look.

Wear Appropriately Sized Accessories

We aren’t in the business of telling people what to do; we’re just saying that if you’re looking to elongate your body, avoid clunky accessories and instead opt for more delicate pieces.

Go Vertical

If you wear stripes and other bold prints, just make sure they’re all vertical. A vertical stripe or pattern has the same effect as the uninterrupted line we talked about earlier, creating the illusion you are taller than you are.

Say No Thanks to Ankle Straps

Ankle straps interrupt that natural line can make you appear shorter. Conversely, shoes without ankle straps make your silhouette longer.
