Feeling Overwhelmed? Here’s How to Reconnect With Yourself

There are a million reasons you may be feeling overwhelmed with life right now but have no fear because we’re here to help you reconnect with yourself in the midst of all the chaos. You have the power to change things and you can bring happiness, hope, and balance back into your life – we just know it!

Press Pause

Once the feeling of being overwhelmed starts to creep in, take a moment to set a timer, sit in your chair or wherever you may be, close your eyes, and just breathe. Think about what you’re feeling and what you need in that moment.

Step Away from the Electronics

Be mindful about what you’re seeing on your screen(s) and make sure to dedicate time each day to unplugging and taking in the world around you. Phones should never be a 24/7 lifeline, and while social media can be used for good, our screens can make us feel anxious and overwhelmed, and disconnected from the world around you. If you’re super attached, you may even consider a social media detox.

Let the Creative Juices Flow

Expressing yourself through art, music, writing, etc. allows you to express yourself without having to use words. Through this process, you’ll release pent-up emotions while also being able to understand your feelings better.

TV Always On? Switch It Up and Turn It Off

No background motion, no background noise, no background music, let your brain rest and pay attention to you and only you.

Make a “No” List

Oftentimes our schedule is the culprit of us feeling overwhelmed. If there’s something you don’t want to do or something you’ve been dreading doing, don’t feel like you’re obligated to do these things and instead do things that make you happy, that you’ll actually enjoy. Setting healthy boundaries is vital for your mental clarity.

Reach Out

Whether you need help with something or just need to vent, your loved ones are there for you to lean on, so reach out to them and let them in.

Cry About It

No, really. If you’re overwhelmed and everything feels like too much, go into the bathroom, shut and lock the door, and just cry. Let it all out. Crying can be an incredible release when you’re feeling overwhelmed and after you’ve let it all out, you can move forward with a little mental clarity.

Reevaluate Your Expectations of Yourself

Take some quiet time to sit down and evaluate what your expectations are right now. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s probably a great idea and the perfect time to soften your expectations of yourself. The name of the game here is self-reflection – connect with yourself to consider what is making you feel the way you feel and what softening your expectations looks or feels like to you.
