Over the last few seasons, we’ve seen crochet tops become increasingly popular. A crochet top adds a boho vibe to any outfit and makes a fun accent piece around which to build your look. And hey, if you’re feeling crafty, you can take up crocheting and make your own! Don’t worry if that’s not your thing; we’ve linked to some of our favorite crochet tops below.

But first, let’s start with a brief history of crochet tops and how we started wearing them in the first place.

A Quick History of Crochet Tops

Crochet as a fashion trend began in the 1800s when Queen Victoria hyped up crocheting during the Irish Famine as a way for people to make money – so much so that women were traveling the country just to teach others how to crochet.

Throughout the early 1900s, people started realizing that crochet could be done by virtually anyone, anywhere, and could be used to create some pretty fabulous clothing and accessories. The craft re-emerged in the 1960s as an entirely new generation discovered crochet and popularized it with those notorious granny squares.

Fashion trends always circle back, which is precisely what happened with crochet tops today – and we’re so happy it did!

Washing Instructions

Crochet tops are inherently delicate, so it’s best to take extra-special care of your pieces to ensure you get maximum wear out of them.

To wash, fill your sink with cold water. Add a small amount of detergent into the water while it’s running. Next, submerge your garment into the cold, soapy water and gently rub small sections together to loosen any dirt or stains. Once you’re done, drain the soap water and rinse the garment with fresh water. Ring it out, then hang dry for several hours.

Crochet Top Picks and Styling Tips

Free People Wildflowers Cardi ($98, shop here)

The best part about a crochet top that buttons down like this one is all the options. You can wear it over another top if that’s more comfortable for you, or you can just throw a bandeau or lace bralette underneath. Keep things simple by pairing it with some light-washed, oversized denim and Birkenstocks.

You can easily pair an off-the-shoulder crochet top like this one with a dressier pair of shorts or even a wrap skirt. Complete the look with gold accessories and a denim jacket.

Mango Oversize Crochet Sweater ($49.99, shop here)

We adore a light crochet sweater that can work in just about any season. We suggest French-tucking it into linen pants, then pairing it with some woven mules and turquoise accessories.
