That’s My Kid!

Be Supportive

One of the best ways to protect your child is to support your child. The beginning of any career is all about trying new things and learning new roles. It feels good to be affirmed, and children that are just starting out are looking for that person to say, “You’re doing a great job”, or “you have what it takes!”  Be that person for them. This industry moves quickly, and it’s important for you to be your child’s rock and number one supporter. By re-affirming their good behavior and commitment to the job they are doing, you will help them form their work ethic for years to come.

Be Present

This might seem like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised at how often teens are left to make their own decisions in this industry. The talent industry has many highly motivated and driven teens that want to experience these opportunities on their own. Nevertheless, when your child needs to travel for a job, it’s important to find your child the proper support and oversight. If your child is under the age of eighteen you should be present in everything from contract negotiations to the actual work your child is doing. If you come across an agency that tries to block your engagement in your child’s career, then your child should refrain from working with that company or agency.

Be Communicative

The ease of internet access can add a new level of difficulty regarding communication between kids and their parents. Emails, social media, text messages and other electronic word-of-mouth communications can be used to influence your teen without your knowledge. Communication with your child is key when they are navigating the world of talent and modeling. Stay on the same page as them. Encourage your child to come to you anytime they feel uncomfortable with something they have read or heard.

Communication is a two-way street, so when you make a point to keep the channels of communication open on your end it shows your child that you are both in this together.
