What Can Botox Be Used for Aside From Wrinkles?

What’s the first thing that pops up in your head when you hear the word Botox? Of course, the injection is used for smoothing out wrinkles. But wrinkles are not the only thing Botox can help with. Here, we discuss some other conditions specialists treat with Botox.

Stop Excessive Blinking

It may be rare, but some people deal with excessive, uncontrollable blinking. How does this happen? There’s an area in the brain that controls muscle movement. When the brain triggers the spastic muscles around the eyes to move, excessive blinking can become a problem. Many healthcare professionals will recommend Botox injections to weaken and relax the eyelid muscles to prevent twitching.

Stop Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a chronic condition that can cause various degrees of distress. In this case, Botox is injected into the underarm area to stop the nerves from releasing the chemical that promotes sweating.

Improve the Appearance of Jowls

With age, jowls, the sagging skin around the chin, can become more pronounced due to a lack of collagen and elastin. You can improve the sagginess through diet, exercise, and hydration, but you’ll never get the full effect of Botox. The right amount will define the jawline, pulling the skin tight.

Stop Drooling

When your salivary glands work overtime, your mouth instantly produces excessive saliva, causing you to drool. This is most common in individuals with Parkinson’s or those who have suffered a stroke. Injecting a small amount of Botox into the salivary glands can reduce saliva production, returning it to “normal.”

Botox Side Effects

Before requesting Botox injections for any treatment, you should review the side effects, which can include:

  • Pain, bruising, redness, and swelling around the injection site
  • Flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, sore throat, tiredness, and diarrhea
  • Headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Indigestion
  • Drooping eyelids (temporarily)
  • Eye irritation or redness
