Having a routine is the simplest, most effective way to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but for those who travel often, a routine can be difficult to maintain. But just because you travel frequently doesn’t mean you should throw fitness (or hydration, or a proper sleep schedule,) out the window. Here are a few tips for staying active no matter where the road takes you.
Plan Ahead
If you can choose where you lay your head at night, ensure your hotel has a gym. If this isn’t an option, a quick Google search will show you all the gyms around you.
Schedule Your Workouts
Whether it’s a morning jog on the treadmill, lifting weights in the evening, or an afternoon yoga sesh, set aside time for your workout and make it part of your schedule. Weather and location pending, consider renting a bike and riding it around the town you’re in. Fresh air, exercise, and sightseeing? That’s a fitness and mental health win.
Keep It Local
CrossFit, yoga, jiu-jitsu, you name it, there’s probably a class for it. If exploring a new area, meeting locals, and trying a new exercise sounds exciting, check out what your destination offers and get sweaty with strangers.
Embrace the Bands
If you prefer to work out in private, pack some resistance bands in your luggage. They’re lightweight, take up little space, and are great for a killer workout. You can also pre-request a yoga mat for your hotel room.
Hit the Trail
If you have time, check out local hiking or walking trails during your travels. Just like renting a bike, you’ll get some exercise, fresh air, and the opportunity to explore a new area.
Know Before You Go
If you know you have a trip coming up, work out body parts that require big weights or machinery ahead of time. Then, while you’re away, you can focus on different, smaller muscle groups.
