Every day, we make many small decisions that impact the planet. In fact, the average American produces roughly 4.9 pounds of trash per day. That’s a lot of trash! The good news is that there are some simple ways to reduce your daily waste. Let’s discuss!
Opt for Reusable Water Bottles
Staying hydrated is important to our overall health, but for the health of our planet, invest in a reusable water bottle. Opting for a glass or metal water bottle prevents plastic from ending up in our oceans.
Buy in Bulk
Anything you use a lot (like cleaning supplies, dry goods, or snacks, buy in bulk). This will cut down on packaging waste.
Recycle
Sure, this sounds like a no-brainer, but waste happens despite our best intentions. Contact your local recycling center to learn what it does and does not accept.
Buy Secondhand and Donate What You Don’t Use
Check out local thrift stores and see what you can buy secondhand (clothes, home decor, jewelry, etc.). If you think you have too many things and need to minimize your stuff, donate to a local thrift store to keep them out of a landfill.
Consider Using a Menstrual Cup
Tampons and pads create a lot of waste. Menstrual cups are reusable, making them easier on the planet. They also come with some added benefits, such as the ability to be inserted before your cycle begins to catch first-day leakage and eliminate the need to carry around other feminine products.
Take Reusable Grocery Bags With You
Skip the paper and plastic bags at the grocery store and keep a few reusable tote bags in your car.
Shop Your Local Farmers Market
Not only is this a fun weekend activity, but it’s a great way to support local farmers. Supermarket products require more energy and packaging.
Say No to Single-Use Food & Drink Containers, Utensils, etc.
Take your own mug to the coffee shop, don’t use plastic straws, and always use silverware instead of plasticware.
Go Digital
If any accounts still send you paper statements, switch them to digital. Similarly, instead of printing receipts, have them sent via text or email.
Swap Out Soaps
Instead of using soap in plastic bottles, use bars of soap. Bonus if you buy from a local maker so that you know the ingredients are all-natural and you are supporting your community.
