Taking inspiration from her decades of iconic fashion choices, Winona Ryder is reclaiming her ’90s “it” girl image in the latest Marc Jacobs campaign.
Shot by photographer Harley Weir and styled by Emma Wyman, the campaign introduces The J Marc Shoulder Bag ($395, shop here), which comes in a variety of bold colors with added silver hardware. It also offers versatility, thanks to its removable chain shoulder strap.
Throughout the photo series, the actress adorns archived Marc Jacobs pieces, including a floor-length tulle skirt, a fur-trimmed jacket, and the Kiki boots, eye-catching platforms from Jacobs’ recently revived Heaven Collection. Of course, no Ryder look is complete without her trademarked cropped pixie haircut, dark-rimmed eyeliner, and matte-brown lips.
Jacobs and Ryder have a history of their own. The pair’s interactions started in December 2001, when Ryder made headlines for being arrested on shoplifting charges in Beverly Hills, California. In her arrest, she was accused of stealing $5,500 worth of designer clothes and accessories from Saks Fifth Avenue, including a $760 cashmere Marc Jacobs sweater.
Her association with the designer didn’t stop there. Following the heavily publicized event, Ryder appeared in court wearing a black and baby-pink Marc Jacobs sweater dress featuring a chic trompe l’oeil collar. (She ultimately faced three years of probation, 480 hours of community service, and a fine.)
The incident led the pair to join forces for the Marc Jacobs Spring 2003 campaign – and again in 2015 for Marc Jacobs Beauty. Despite Ryder’s past, Jacobs has nothing but kind words to say about her. In an Instagram post from December 2015, he called her “…my dear friend (of over two and a half decades), the stunningly beautiful and extraordinarily talented, Winona Ryder…a brilliant mind, talent, and physical beauty like no other.”
Between her collaboration with Jacobs and recent work on the hit Netflix show Stranger Things, the future looks bright for the iconic ’90s star – and we couldn’t be more here for it.
