In 2022, we’re ditching harsh ingredients and long skincare routines for gentler products that protect our skin and are easy to apply. The newest products are revealing some of these skincare trends. Here’s what you need to know.
Phytoestrogens
Phytoestrogens are plant-based compounds that can be used topically to combat the skin-related impact of low estrogen levels brought on by aging. Much like collagen, estrogen is linked to skin strength and elasticity. Phytoestrogens like black cohosh, flaxseed oil, bakuchiol, and resveratrol have been shown to help heal the skin and combat skin issues like thinning, dryness, and crepey texture.
Brightening Ingredients
Dark spots happen for various reasons, but they are often environmental. If the sun or an injury has left you with dark spotting, look for products whose ingredients include tranexamic acid or cysteamine. Tranexamic acid is known to interrupt the skin’s normal response to UV rays, combating hyperpigmentation. Cysteamine is a potent antioxidant that dermatologists can prescribe to treat hyperpigmentation. Be sure to pair any brightening ingredients with soothing ingredients to combat irritation.
Facial Massagers and Rollers
If you venture into skincare on TikTok, you’re sure to see plenty of gua shas or quartz rollers. These massage tools are used to stimulate the face to reshape it in some way. For example, chilled tools can reduce puffiness, vibrations can strengthen the skin, LED lights can stimulate collagen production, and any type of facial massage can increase blood flow.
Chemical Peels
At-home peels are expected to become more common in the coming months, thanks to milder formulas that everyday people, not just aestheticians, can safely use. If you want to try an at-home peel, don’t forget that your skin needs proper hydration, so look for peels containing nourishing ingredients like glycerin, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid. If your skin is still feeling a little dry or stiff, you can apply other gentle, fragrance-free moisturizing products on top.
Blue Light SPF
Many of our foundations, BB creams, and powders already offer SPF, but in the digital age, we need more than just protection from the sun! Blue light emitted from our devices is believed to be linked to skin aging in the form of wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots. This is why more products include formulas that protect from blue light and UV rays.
