Does crying really make us feel better? One study of thousands of recent crying experiences found that a majority of people, though not all, did have a boost in mood after they cry. Physically, the calming effects of crying—like slower breathing—outlast the stress-response effects, like increased heart rate and sweating. And receiving social support during the crying bout is a strong predictor of whether crying improves mood, so take an offered shoulder and cry all over it.
