Okay, so we’re all aware that thrifting is seriously good for the planet, is a great way to save money, and will ensure that your style is totally unique. But how many times have you set foot in your local thrift store and felt uninspired or overwhelmed by the amount of inventory? Have no fear, here are a few tips that will have you thrifting like a pro.
Consider your main goal.
There are many types of thrifters out there, but most of us fall into one of two categories: either we’re searching for pieces we love—whether that’s vintage florals, old school band tees, vintage statement coats, or a combination of all of the above, or we’re shopping for staple pieces from certain desired brands. Consider your personal goal prior to your thrifting adventure and from the start you’ll be able to separate pieces you’re interested in from the mass of options. Try to find the happy balance of keeping an eye out for something unexpected, but also knowing when to walk away from pieces that you’ll never wear.
Thrift often and when you have time.
Most thrift stores run on donations, so you truly never know what you may find as you browse. That being said, you want to make sure you have time to take it all in. If you have a free day, try a thrift crawl, where you go to multiple stores in a day. Follow your favorite thrift stores on social media to stay up to date on sales and to know when stores are freshly stocked.
Know when to say ‘no.’
It’s easy to get carried away when you’re thrifting—the prices are so good that anything in your size seems like a must-have. Regardless of all the hidden treasure you’re discovering, it never hurts to stop and ask yourself a few questions such as: is this the look I’m going for? How do I plan on styling this? Where will I wear this? If you can confidently answer these questions and still feel good about the pieces you’ve found, make that purchase! If you’re on the fence, just say no and walk away. Just because something is a steal or is available in your size doesn’t mean you have to have it. Someone else will appreciate that piece. Don’t be discouraged if you walk out empty-handed. That’s part of the beauty of thrift stores—the next time you go, there will be new inventory to go through.
Never ever skip the men’s section.
Always check out the men’s section for cool graphic tees, oversized flannels and sweaters, and funky vintage pieces. As with any thrift store find, make sure you double and triple check for any holes, snags, or stains that may be beyond your ability to clean, mend, or live with.
Thrifting is a great way to live more sustainably. It ensures your wardrobe is unique, and frankly is just a great way to surprise yourself and spend the day. Follow these tips and, in no time, you’ll be secondhand shopping like a pro.
