Key Traits to Look for in a Significant Other

It’s no secret that dating today is a complicated process filled with situationships, ghosting, and general frustration. But when it comes to long-term relationships, what qualities should you look for in a significant other? Here are some key traits.

Kindness

The rebel thing might be appealing at first, but it’s not what most people want long term. In fact, a 2019 poll asked 64,000 women what they looked for in a partner, and kindness was the top choice.

Chemistry

Chemistry can’t be quantified, but it is ultimately important in a partner. Without chemistry, a relationship is more of a friendship, missing that spark that drives passion. However, it’s also worth noting that chemistry alone is not enough. It must come with other traits.

Intelligence

Many people want a partner that they consider intelligent. This doesn’t mean your SO needs to have a doctorate or spend their life dedicated to academia. It simply means a healthy relationship has enough intellectual conversations, and where you understand one another.

Maturity

Many people end up in relationships with a partner that “isn’t ready,” which can be frustrating. If you’re looking for something long-lasting, you need to know that a person is mature enough to handle a serious relationship – and make it clear that is what you want upfront.

Confidence

You should look for a partner who is confident but not cocky. Confidence is all about the way someone carries themselves. This is an important trait, especially if you struggle with your own confidence, as it can help you develop a mutually beneficial partnership.

Honesty and Trust

Honesty is always the best policy – including in dating. Faithfulness is one of the top things people look for in a relationship. When there’s no honesty, there’s no trust.

Friendship

Most people want their partner to be reliable, often citing the desire to find their best friend. Your forever partner needs to be someone you can talk to and never grow tired of being around.

It’s important to think about what you’re looking to get out of a relationship. Challenge yourself to determine what you want, write it down, and make it known. And don’t settle for anything less!
