While it makes an excellent aromatic and flavoring for dishes, rosemary also has several health benefits. Here, we discuss five things rosemary can be used for that you may not be aware of.
Supports the Immune System
Because rosemary is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, it is thought to boost the immune system. Rosemary also contains rosmarinic acid, a compound that kills viruses and bacteria, and carnosic acid, which can prevent cancer cells from dividing and spreading in the G2 phase (the second-to-last phase of the cell cycle before they divide).
Promotes Hair Growth
Rosemary oil can also treat hair loss (alopecia) in both men and women by blocking a byproduct of testosterone that damages hair follicles, which is the underlying cause of this condition. Research also suggests it promotes hair growth.
Reduces Stress
Stress is an unfortunate side effect of daily pressures and circumstances. In a 2007 study, 22 young adults were asked to sniff rosemary oil for five minutes. Results showed that their saliva had 23% lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol than those who didn’t sniff rosemary.
Provides Pain Relief
A 2015 study states that rosemary oil has potential therapeutic properties when combined with an analgesic drug. Research conducted in 2020 also showed that rosemary can be used for its anti-spasmodic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and memory-boosting properties. A separate study performed in 2017 showed that topical use of menthol and rosemary lessened the severity of leg pain in hemodialysis patients.
Improves Brain Function
In 2012, a study suggested that the smell of rosemary positively impacts cognitive function and mood. A 2009 study showed that nursing students who used rosemary sachets significantly reduced test-taking stress and anxiety. It also showed a decrease in negative personal statements and pulse rates.
