Getting a period every month flat-out sucks. Unwanted breakouts appear, mood swings start, the bloat is constant, and don’t even get us started on the cramps that make us want to keel over. How can you get some relief from unwanted period cramps? Check out some remedies below.
Essential Oil Massages
If you’re an essential oil gal, you may already have cinnamon, clove, lavender, marjoram, rose, or
sage oil stockpiled in your collection. If you do, choose one and mix it with a carrier oil such as coconut or jojoba oil. When combined with essential oil, the carrier oils can safely “carry” the blend into your skin and work their magic to ease period cramps. Always test a small area of skin before applying to your entire abdomen to ensure you have no allergies to the combination.
Yoga
No one knows the definitive answer as to why or how yoga helps alleviate period symptoms, but it’s either because you’re properly stretching the right muscles or because many poses have a relaxing effect on the body. No matter the case, it’s worth a shot.
Avoid Comfort Foods
We know it’s the last thing you want to hear (considering menstruation can increase cravings), but you should stay away from unhealthy foods, which can worsen cramps. We’re talking about foods high in fat, salt, and carbohydrates (like cheese, fried food, potato chips, French fries, and pastries), as these will likely cause extra inflammation.
Over-the-Counter Medications
When in doubt, let some OTC pain relievers – Midol, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, or Acetaminophen – can help with cramps. If the pain persists, call your doctor for additional medical advice.
