How to Hop on the Blurred Lips Trend

Typically, we shoot for a perfectly lined, clean lip look where smudges and smears are not welcome. But this fall, makeup artists are predicting that the lived-in blurred lip trend will reign supreme. Here’s what you need to know about rocking the next hot lip look.

What Is a Blurred Lip?

The blurred lip look is similar to the concept of smudged eyeliner: an effortless and natural twist to your current go-to look. It’s meant to be imperfect, making it easy to wear all day long – no touch-ups needed. When a look is supposed to be messy, the application is easy. Here’s how you can master it.

Get the Right Products

You will need a lip product with a matte finish that can be built up, like Lancôme’s L’Absolu Rouge Intimatte Lipstick ($32, shop here). If you want to apply with a brush, select one that is soft with fluffy bristles.

Set Your Base

Use your foundation or a nude lip liner to cover up the natural shade of your lips before applying lip color.

Apply Color

There are multiple ways to apply the blurred lips look. The first method is to take the pigment of your choice and dab it onto your lips using your ring finger. Next, build the color at the inner lips, then smudge it outward. You’ll know you’re finished once you have a soft ombré that slowly fades from darkest in the middle to lightest at the outside edges.

You can also accomplish this look using a brush. Similar to method one, you’ll want to apply your lipstick to the center of your mouth, then use the brush to blend the color outward.

Add Gloss, If You Desire

In most cases, the blurred lip trend is worn with a matte shade since the color is easier to control. If you want to use gloss, apply a matte shade in the center of your lips, then apply a gloss like L’Oréal’s Infallible 8-Hour Pro Lip Gloss ($9.99, shop here) over the top. Start your gloss wand on the inside and move it outward to blur the color.

This fall, you can ditch those perfect lines and embrace the beauty of imperfection with a flawless blurred lip look.
