When the days get shorter, and temperatures get colder, staying active is difficult not only for us but also for our four-legged family members. But regular movement is vital for dogs, no matter their size. The good news is, with a little imagination, you can keep your pooch active all winter long.
Walk It Out
If it’s too cold outside, you can set your dog up on a treadmill for a walk inside. Sure, there aren’t as many exciting things to sniff and investigate, but it can keep boredom at bay. Just ensure the treadmill is set at a very low speed, and monitor your dog the entire time. If your pup shows signs of slowing down, the walk should be over – and it’s probably time for a treat!
Work Hard for the Treats
Your dog may never admit it, but they prefer to work for treats. Consider getting your dog a feeding toy that keeps them occupied and rewarded their hard work. You can also consider hiding a few treats throughout your home for them to find.
Teach a New Trick or Command
Teaching your dog new tricks or commands is a great way to keep them active and entertained. Start simple with “sit” and “stay,” then graduate to more complicated commands like rolling over. Not only will this keep your dog active, but you’ll see better behavior.
Plan a Play Date
Give your pup a chance to socialize, whether it’s a visit to doggy daycare or with a friend’s dog who is also itching for playtime. Even if it’s just a car ride with friends for a pup cup, your fur babies will come home happy.
Go Shopping
The next time you visit a pet-friendly store, take your dog with you. Your pup gets to take in many new sights and smells, and you’ll probably provide employees with some much-needed serotonin.
