A Guide to Packing the Ultimate Beach Bag

Sometimes we get so excited about spending a day at the beach that we forget to pack even the most basic essentials in our beach bags. Use our guide as a checklist, and you’ll never have to worry about not having what you need while relaxing with your toes in the sand.

Lip Balm

Nothing is worse than dry, cracked lips on the beach, so bring a good lip balm with SPF. We like the dermatologist-recommended EltaMD UV Lip Balm Broad-Spectrum SPF 36 ($14, shop here).

Hair Products

Your hair should not have to suffer after you’ve had an awesome day at the beach, so pack a small bottle of detangler or serum and a wide-tooth comb or wet brush to keep your locks nourished and tangle-free while enjoying the sun and surf.

Reusable Water Bottle

Plastic is a big problem when it comes to aquatic life, so do your part to keep it out of our oceans by packing a reusable water bottle like the Hydro Flask Wide Mouth Water Bottle with Flex Straw Cap ($49.95, shop here)

A Change of Clothes (Don’t Forget the Undies!)

It’s always nice to have a dry set of clothes, undergarments included, to change into after a day at the beach. Sitting in a wet or sandy swimsuit for any length of time isn’t our idea of fun!

Some Form of Entertainment

A day at the beach is the perfect opportunity to put on your Taylor Swift playlist, start a new book, or catch up on your favorite podcast. Don’t forget earbuds, whichever device you require, and, of course, a portable charger so nothing dies on you.

A Rest-Worthy Spot

Plopping directly onto the sand isn’t very comfortable, so pack a beach towel, blanket, or chair to relax on. We like the Wetcat Sand-Free Quick Dry Turkish Beach Blanket ($29.99, shop here)

A Beach Tent or Umbrella

Of course, we want to soak up every last bit of vitamin D, but there’s a lot to be said for a shady spot to call your own, especially if you’re spending several hours or the entire day at the beach.

Moisturizer or Aloe Vera

Between the sun and the saltwater, your skin will be screaming for some hydration. Have some moisturizer to slather on before you leave – or aloe vera if you get too much sun.

Waterproof Phone Case

You know you’ll want some pics for the ’gram. With a waterproof phone case, you aren’t limited to only sand and sun photos; you can get shots in the water, too. You can get this Shein Clear Waterproof Phone Bag for just $1 (shop here).

Snacks and a Cooler

For the beach, we recommend snacks that are both filling and won’t melt, like popcorn, trail mix, or nuts. And if you’re packing any beverages, take a cooler to keep them cold.

First Aid Kit

Whether you’re prone to accidents or just like to be prepared, we recommend tossing a small first aid kit in your beach bag – just in case – with Band-Aids, pain relievers, and any medications you might need while you’re out and about.

Sunscreen and Sunglasses

Pack extra. Accidents happen, so having an extra pair of sunglasses is never a bad idea. And you never know when you’ll save someone else’s day by having extra sunscreen.
