Books often lead to some of the best TV shows and films. From horror to romance to science fiction, here are the TV and film book adaptations we can’t wait to see in 2023.
Stephen King film adaptations have been popular for decades, so it is no surprise that 1975’s Salem’s Lot is slated for the big screen. Salem’s Lot is the small English hometown of a writer named Ben Mears, who comes home and soon discovers he’s not the only recent arrival; there is an undesirable stranger who threatens to ruin the lives of those around him.
After the success of Dune: Part One in 2021 comes the second part of this popular sci-fi story. Based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, the story continues after the betrayal and loss of the House of Atreides. We will likely find Paul and his mother with the Fremen learning to navigate the hostile planet and plotting against the House of Harkonnen.
The Fall of the House of Usher
Coming to Netflix in 2023 is Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher. Flanagan is known for great shows such as The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass, among others. His adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher will embody Giallo horror, an Italian cinema genre from the 1960s that includes disorienting framing, vivid colors, and deep contrast between light and shadow. The story follows a brother and sister, the last members of the Usher family, who are both ill. The brother believes the house is alive, driving him to bring chaos to their lives.
Casey McQuiston’s 2019 novel Red, White & Royal Blue will soon be adapted for the big screen by Amazon Studios. The movie will explore what happens when America’s First Son, Alex Claremont-Diaz, falls in love with the Prince of Wales. Upon meeting, they suffer an altercation, but because of PR reasons, a “truce” is made. Not long after, from their fake friendship, true feelings begin to develop.
Soon to be on the big screen is Killers of the Flower Moon, based on a novel by the same name. The film is produced and directed by Michael Scorsese and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. It is about members of the Osage Tribe in Oklahoma who were murdered under suspicious circumstances in the 1920s. Whoever investigated their deaths soon met a similar demise. The murders and failed investigations inspired FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover to launch an investigation.
