Winter is coming, which means it will be much more difficult to achieve that “effortless” dewy look we’ve come to love in the warmer months. But it’s not impossible! Follow these makeup tips to keep that gorgeous, glowing skin throughout the winter months.
One Word: Moisturize
The cold, dry winter air is rough on your skin, and if you don’t keep it moisturized, it can become flaky and irritated. The best way to combat this is to apply moisturizer before your makeup. And don’t forget to apply it to your neck!
Pro-tip: Mix a 1:1 concoction of moisturizer and foundation, then apply your makeup as you normally would. You can also mix moisturizer with your primer if that feels better on your skin.
Go Easy on the Powder
Makeup has come a long way in the last few years. Products that used to come only as powder can now be purchased as mists, waxes, and glosses. And while we don’t mind powder during the warmer months, they can make your skin look dull in the winter. If you find this is the case, continue to opt for the “wet” versions of your powder products.
Look for Green-Tinted Products
During colder months, many people experience redness on their face from exposure to the elements. One way to combat this is to use green-tinted products. Because green falls on the opposite of red on the color wheel, green products can “cancel out” redness. The best way to do this is with a green primer or green-tinted moisturizer. If you want to go the extra mile, combine this with a green-tinted foundation.
Keep Your Lips Happy
Dry, flaky lips from exposure to arid, cold air can make products go on unevenly and uncomfortably. To ensure lips stay plump and kissable, it’s important to exfoliate your lips with a lip scrub to get all of the dead skin off. You should also invest in a moisturizing balm that is either sheer or close to a lip color you wear most often.
Go Waterproof
All it takes is one strong gust of winter wind, and our eyes are like floodgates. This is why we highly recommend waterproof eye makeup for the winter months. Keep in mind that this may mean you need to invest in a good eye makeup remover – because when brands say “waterproof,” they mean it!
Don’t Forget to Set
If you like to set your makeup so it doesn’t go anywhere during the day, check your setting spray to see if it offers any hydrating ingredients like aloe or white tea. If not, consider putting that setting spray away until springtime and looking for a hydrating version so your skin feels fresh and moisturized all day long.
