Over the past five or so years, CBD has gained more and more popularity in the marketplace. But what exactly is CBD? What are the benefits? Is it safe? Below, we share some basic information about CBD so you can decide for yourself if it’s right for you. Let’s get started!
What Is CBD?
CBD is the shortened form of cannabidiol, an active ingredient of the hemp plant, a variety of cannabis. Unlike marijuana, which is also derived from cannabis, CBD does not contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive ingredient responsible for giving you that “high” feeling. So if you were worried that CBD might make you see pink elephants, this is not possible.
The Benefits of CBD
Studies have shown that CBD may have the following health benefits:
- It may help you fall asleep quicker and improve your sleep
- It may reduce your anxiety.
- It may reduce pain, discomfort, and inflammation.
- It may help with addiction and lower your craving for supplements.
- It may help relieve migraines.
- It may help with eating issues and nausea, which is especially helpful for chemo patients.
- It may help ease epilepsy and seizures.
Types of CBD
CBD is available in many different forms. Let us have a look at the different types of CBD products that are available.
- CBD Edibles: CBD edibles come in a wide variety, like gummies, drinks, candies, and baked goods. These are not the “special” brownies you may have tasted in your youth. And, no, they won’t make you high. When you consume these edibles, the CBD enters your bloodstream through your digestive tract. It takes an hour to absorb and lasts about six hours.
- CBD Oils: CBD oil typically comes in a small bottle with a dropper that you can use over your food or put under your tongue. CBD oils work much quicker than the other CBD forms – about 30 minutes to absorb – and the effects can last five hours.
- CBD Capsules: Capsules are one of the most preferred forms of CBD and are a great choice if you don’t like the taste of the oils or other CBD-infused products.
- CBD Creams: CBD creams offer one of the easiest ways to take CBD. You just need to identify the area you are experiencing pain and rub the CBD cream on that part. The skin then absorbs the CBD and triggers a reaction with the receptors in the endocannabinoid system, supporting pain relief.
Is CBD Safe for You?
While CBD on its own doesn’t pose significant risks, it can cause some side effects like mood swings, irritability, nausea, and diarrhea. In some cases, CBD may thin out your blood and increase the level of medication in your system. This is due to the CBD competing with the liver enzymes responsible for breaking down these medicines. If you take high doses of CBD, your liver-related blood tests may also be abnormal.
If you are unsure whether it is safe to take CBD, we highly suggest you consult your doctor. They can assess and determine if CBD is the right choice for you.
