Prevent Dry Skin Before It Happens

There are a ton of things to be excited about as the temperatures drop – like pumpkin spice lattes, sweater weather, apple picking, and fall foliage. But one thing we’re not looking forward to? Dry skin. Cold air draws moisture away from the skin, leaving it dry, rough, cracked, and flaky. But this year, we plan to prevent dry skin before it happens with the following tips!

Use a Good Defense System

The main culprits of dry skin are wind, sun, and dry air, so if you are exposed to these things, make sure you wear protective clothing, a hat to block your face, and broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Restore Humidity in Your Home

Your home’s heating system can also cause your skin to dry out. The best way to restore moisture in your home is by using a humidifier.

Cool it in the Shower or Bath

We love a piping hot shower or bath as much as the next person, but hot water tends to strip away your skin’s natural oil barrier, causing it to lose moisture and dry out. So instead, use warm water – and always use gentle cleansers!

Moisturize With Care

The best time to moisturize is right after your bath or shower while your skin is still damp. The same goes for your hands: Apply lotion immediately after you wash them to keep the moisture locked in and dry, cracked skin at bay.

Keep Your Insides Hydrated, Too

It’s just as important to ensure you’re staying hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of water every day and eating water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables. Likewise, it’s best to consume caffeine and alcohol in moderation since they can both be dehydrating.

Soft Touches Only

If you’re a fan of using a loofah or sponge in the shower, make sure you aren’t damaging the skin by scrubbing too hard. And when you’re drying off, remember to pat or blot your skin and never rub it dry.

A Smooth Shave

Shaving tends to scrape off of skin’s natural moisturizing oils. So with that in mind, the best time to shave is right after a bath or shower while your unwanted hairs are more pliable. Using a moisturizing shave gel and shaving in the direction your hair grows will also protect your skin from any damage. Lastly, always make sure you’re using a sharp razor, as dull blades can damage your skin and leave it feeling irritated.
