Real talk for a minute: Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and sun exposure can create visible signs of aging. So whether you are lounging by the pool, taking a tropical vacation, or simply walking around outside, sunscreen is always a must! However, not all sunscreen is created equal. And we also need to watch out for Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, as these ingredients are killing the reefs. When in doubt, look for the “Reef Safe” label!
Here are some tips for choosing the best sunscreen.
Choose a Broad Spectrum
Two main types of rays come from the sun: UVA and UVB. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing a sunscreen that is considered broad-spectrum, meaning it protects from both UVA and UVB rays. Although they are both bad for your skin, UVA rays cause premature aging, while UVB rays cause sunburn. When you have overexposure to both UVA and UVB, you increase your risk of skin cancer.
Consider Your Skin Type
Everyone’s skin is different, which is something to consider when choosing sunscreen. If you suffer from acne, look for formulas labeled as “non-comedogenic,” which won’t block your pores. If you suffer from dry skin, you may want to choose a sunscreen with moisturizing and hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid.
Take a Look at SPF
The sun protection factor (SPF) measures how effectively the sunscreen can filter out UVB light. Most dermatologists recommend sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, which blocks about 97% of UVB rays.
Reapply Often
If you plan to be outside, apply your base coat about 30 minutes before leaving your home. You should then reapply every two hours and anytime you go into water or experience excessive sweating.
