People today are talking a lot about sustainability – which, in our opinion, is a very good thing! Everything you do can impact our planet, from what you eat to how you get around to the clothes you wear. The good news is that everyone has the power to make a difference. Here are a few small changes you can make to live more sustainably!
Use Less Energy
Using less energy at home means reducing carbon emissions. You can do this by turning off lights and appliances when not in use, using less AC and heat, taking shorter showers, and hanging your clothes instead of using the dryer.
Eat Less Meat
Meat production is one of the biggest contributors to climate change: a global average of 110 pounds of greenhouse gases is released per 3.5 ounces of protein. While it may be unrealistic for you to give up meat entirely, reducing your consumption – even just two days out of the week – is an easy way to live more sustainably.
Use Reusable Options
Single-use products like plastic water bottles often end up in landfills or the ocean. This causes harm to wildlife and the environment. Thousands of animals each year are killed due to ingesting plastic. You can help prevent this by choosing eco-friendly options like reusable water bottles, shopping bags, and stainless steel straws.
Go Paperless
If most of the bills you receive in the mail go into the trash immediately, it’s time to “go paperless.” This can end up saving so much unnecessary paper while reducing your carbon footprint.
Reuse and Recycle
Educate yourself on the recycling requirements in your city and follow suit by putting the correct items into the recycling bins. For each ton of recycled plastic, you will save 5,774 kilowatt-hours of energy, 16.3 barrels of oil, 98 million BTUs of energy, and 30 cubic yards of landfill space. And always reuse products as many times as possible before throwing them away.
Will You Make an Effort?
Living more sustainably may seem complicated, but in reality, minor changes to your daily habits can make a difference. If everyone does their part, a little can go a long way!
