Bathing your pet can feel like a struggle. But it doesn’t have to! Keeping your pet clean during the winter is as simple as these few steps!
Set a Schedule
Pets need to be cleaned regularly, but it is not as often as you would think. In fact, dogs only need to be groomed about once a month. And, depending on the breed, you can extend that time slightly. Still, if you set a monthly bathing schedule, it will be easier to stay on top of, and you don’t end up with a bigger project when it comes time to get it done.
Rely on Moisturizing Shampoos
During the winter, your pet’s skin can dry out easily, leaving them with dandruff and dry, itchy, flaky skin. So, when it comes time to give them their monthly cleaning, make sure you’re using a moisturizing shampoo that protects their skin while still getting them nice and clean. While you should never use human shampoos or soaps on your pup, there are dog shampoos that incorporate moisture technology.
Moisturize
Just as you should use moisturizing shampoos, you can also use moisturizers made for pets. For example, coconut oil-based pet lotions keep their skin moisturized between baths. So if your pet’s skin is particularly dry, look into available options. Always consult your vet before using any new product.
Use a Groomer
Even if you don’t typically take your pup to the groomer, a professional may be your best option during the winter. There are countless groomer options, including mobile groomers that come right to your door. It’ll be one less thing off your to-do list, and you’ll be thrilled that your pet is clean.
Wipe Your Pet’s Feet
Yes, it’s a bit of a task to wipe down your pup’s feet every time they come in from outside, but it’s the best way to keep your pet—and carpets—clean. Plus, it makes it less of a chore when you give them their monthly bath since they won’t have a full month of dirt caked onto the bottoms of their paws.
Keep Your Pet Warm
If you’re bathing your pet at home, be sure to use warm water (but not too hot!) and give them a warm place for them to dry off. If you’re worried about the air in the bathroom being a little too cold, rely on a space heater to keep the area warm so your pet isn’t shivering when they step out of the tub. It’s the little things that make all the difference.
