Cold, dry weather doesn’t just affect your skin and face; it affects your scalp and hair as well. Unfortunately, a dry scalp and hair can lead to itchiness and irritation, but there are steps you can take to combat the discomfort and keep your hair looking and feeling lush and voluminous. The following tips and tricks will help keep your hair and scalp happy and healthy all winter long.
Choose the Right Type of Hat
Select a winter hat lined with softer materials such as fleece or cotton instead of harsher materials such as wool. We like L.L.Bean’s Winter Lined Pom Hat ($29.95, shop here) and Madewell’s (Re)sourced Cotton Cuffed Beanie ($35, shop here). You can also wear a silk scarf under a wool hat to protect your hair.
Trim Your Ends
Generally speaking, routinely trimming your hair is important, but it is even more necessary during the colder months. The dry weather increases your chances of getting split ends due to the lack of moisture in the air.
Don’t Overwash
When it’s cold outside, nothing feels better than a nice hot shower; but your hair doesn’t agree. Washing your hair too often – especially in hot water – can dry out your scalp, making it itchy. It can also cause overproduction of sebum, the natural oil your scalp produces.
Use Leave-In Conditioner
Using a leave-in conditioner helps your hair stay moisturized throughout the day and between washes.
Dry Your Hair
If you shower in the morning, don’t leave the house with wet hair. It can dry and damage your tresses and make them break more easily. Instead, squeeze excess water with a fleece towel or cotton T-shirt, then use the medium or low setting on a hairdryer to dry.
Turn On Your Humidifier
We have already told you the great benefits of using a humidifier to keep your skin happy, healthy, and glowing. But humidifiers also help keep your hair moisturized and healthy by helping your scalp retain the moisture it needs.
