We’re at that point of the year where the air feels a little crisper, the days are shorter, and we’ve got apple picking, pumpkin carving, and all things fall on the brain. For many of us, a coat or heavy jacket will soon be a necessary part of our wardrobe. Here are some tips for shopping for jackets and coats, plus some of our favorite outerwear pieces!
Tips for Buying a Winter Jacket or Coat
- Any type of outerwear can make you feel bulkier than you are. You can keep a more slimming appearance by selecting one with vertical seams!
- The longer the coat, the warmer you stay.
- Check out the construction to confirm the coat is adequately made – meaning there aren’t any strings hanging down or questionable seams. This step can ensure the garment will last more than a couple seasons.
- Two terms you shouldn’t forget when shopping for outerwear: windproof and water-resistant. Shop according to your climate, of course, but if you live somewhere that gets a lot of rain, water-resistant outerwear is going to save you a lot of soggy mornings. Similarly, look for windproof fabrics if you live somewhere where it gets windy.
- Don’t forget corresponding accessories such as gloves, hats, and scarves.
Our Outerwear Picks
Madewell Addition Quilted Packable Puffer Jacket ($138, shop here)
Leave it to Madewell to give us a timeless-looking puffer coat. The color gives us Wes Anderson vibes, and we love that it is made of recycled fabric, filled with PrimaLoft insulation, and features a hood and an adjustable drawstring hem. This is a great transitional coat since it is thin enough to add extra layers underneath but warm enough to wear on its own.
Bubish Charlotte Faux Fur Coat from Anthropologie ($299, shop here)
Why shouldn’t you add a touch of drama to your coat? This single-breasted faux fur coat is an excellent choice for winter (remember what we said about long coats?). There is also something chic about the allover color; it would look especially great with monochrome outfits.
BDG Kiko Colorblocked Windbreaker Jacket ($129, shop here)
Depending on where you live, there’s a good chance a windbreaker won’t get you all the way through the winter, but this one from Urban Outfitters makes for a great fall jacket. But if it’s been over a decade since you’ve donned a windbreaker, it won’t take you long to remember how warm they can be.
