Should You Be Washing Your Face In The Shower?

When it comes to perfecting your skin routine, there are so many products, methods, and do’s and don’ts we’re often overloaded with. Many of us like to multitask with skincare—either to speed up the process or to make things a little bit easier. Washing your face in the shower is a common way to do just that, but is it good for your skin?

Is Washing Your Face in the Shower Bad for Your Skin?

Does washing your face in the shower cause acne and other skin-related problems? According to dermatologists, it doesn’t matter if you wash your face in the shower or at the sink (thankfully!). There are, however, a few things that you should be aware of and avoid when washing your face, including the following:

  1. Don’t take extremely hot showers, as these are bad for your skin in general, causing it to dry out while stripping healthy and protective oils.
  2. Do not wash your face in the shower if you are using chemicals in your routine.
  3. Wash your face twice a day, (morning and night), whether in the shower or the sink.
  4. There is no evidence to show that washing your face in the shower can cause acne.
  5. Washing your face in the shower removes excess dirt, makeup, sebum, and pollution as effectively as if you were to wash your face at the sink.
  6. Using lukewarm water to cleanse your face is best. Hot water can dehydrate your skin, and cold water, contrary to popular belief, doesn’t actually tighten or close your pores! There are benefits of using cold water for some skin types, which include reduced redness and keeping your pores from producing excess oil.
