Why You Shouldn’t Be Drinking Water While Eating

Drinking water during meals might seem like a good idea, but it hinders your digestion and causes significant insulin fluctuation.

If you aren’t feeling thirsty, your fluid intake is likely just right. And while it may seem like you’ll eat less if you chug water during meals, it’s not the best time to quench your thirst. In fact, it’s best to drink a glass of water at least 30 minutes before a meal.

Reason 1: Your Glucose Levels

Drinking water while eating sweet foods and desserts is linked to a higher sugar spike than what is considered healthy.

Researchers analyzed blood sugar levels of people eating a donut while drinking water, and their blood sugar levels went through the roof!

They later explained that the water intake during the snack caused the body to absorb the glucose (sugar) faster, and suggested drinking water half an hour before or one hour after your meal to minimize the sugar’s effect.

Reason 2: Digestion

If you must drink water during a meal, it is advised to take small sips only to wash down food. Otherwise, you risk diluting your stomach’s reservoir of hydrochloric acid, which is essential in breaking down food properly.

Reason 3: Enzymes

Did you know the digestion process begins before you swallow your food? The enzymes released via saliva help break down what is being eaten. When we’re constantly drinking water, these beneficial enzymes are diluted, interfering with the digestion process from the start.
