Unleash Your Inner Enthusiast: Starting and Maintaining a Fulfilling Hobby

Having a hobby can improve your mood and lower stress. However, it’s not uncommon to start a hobby and then have difficulty sticking with it. Life gets in the way (or we get in our own way in our pursuit of perfection). In this post, we give some tips for unleashing your inner enthusiast and keeping up with your new hobby.

Create a List of Your Interests

Start by creating a list of things you want to try. At this stage, put down everything you like or think you may enjoy without limiting yourself. This is when you can be open to all possibilities. Some examples include painting, biking, running, yoga, reading, photography, playing an instrument, and gardening. After creating your list, highlight what stands out most and take it from there.

Be Realistic

Give yourself realistic expectations. Hobbies should be fun. Adding unneeded pressure can be discouraging and lead you to quit the hobby altogether. Determine how much time you can dedicate to your hobby each week and the time of day that works best for you. If you are not a morning person, don’t start a hobby that requires you to wake up early. Try to do your hobby when you are most energized and available from work and other responsibilities.

Remove the Pressure

Embarking on a new hobby is about getting out of your comfort zone and embracing the learning curve. Don’t feel the need to perfect a new skill or reach endurance levels within the first week – or even the first few months. Depending on your hobby, you may meet new people, but it’s okay if you don’t spark friendships immediately. Allow yourself to enjoy every stage of learning something new.

Schedule Time

Maintaining a hobby is easier when you schedule time for it. Sometimes, the hobby has a scheduled time and date, such as a dance class or book club. For hobbies without this set structure, create your own schedule. If it helps, have a friend hold you accountable to keep you on track.

Stay With It

Keep with your hobby as long as it brings you joy. The point is to feed your soul. This said, if you find you don’t enjoy your new hobby, let it go and try something else.
